THE STORY OF DARK WORLD
walnut street, toronto, 1991
walnut street, toronto, 1991
in a state of transition, I started a new phase of my journey
after being dropped by my record label A&M Records
in 1986, married, a new Dad and a drive to keep writing & recording
more obsessed than ever - self consumed
the tortured artist yawn
the very cool thing about being signed to a record company
in the early 80's is that they gave you these large cheques
called 'advances' for you to make a record for them
I spent half of it on gear and built a home studio in toronto.
Rhythmic frameworks mostly using my Apple Mac Plus computer
take them to the studio and track, add live instruments/voices
then mix in the larger format (proper studio)
without a label, there was no phase 2, no large format
I was confined to my smaller laboratory to record and mix
and it was less than perfect
in 1988 I started experimenting with Intelligent Music software
which randomized MIDI events - metric music - a retro AI for music
much like taking coloured confetti and throwing it up
watching it fall and seeing patterns
on the floor - editing/reorganizing a bit
then importing the MIDI file into Performer
a more traditional music sequencer
IM was way cool w/rhythms I found
requiring aptitudes of patience & change
97% of my time doing that was junk/garbage BUT
3% of the time? OK what do we have here?
this is one of them - a seed that expanded
started in intelligent music - jam factory
and finished at spiral studio - walnut ave., toronto
the opening track on night parachuting '91
fast forward 35 years
a few days ago I finished the National Geographic documentary series
Liberation: D-Day to Berlin
pulled out Night Parachuting and listened to Dark World
for the first time in many years - a mood thing for me - pulled to that
remixing - fun
